The story goes that Niratha slept on the island and befriended local fishermen who brought him gifts. The next day he instructed them to build the temple, as it would be an excellent place to worship the sea gods.
Venomous sea snakes are said to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. A giant one was allegedly created from Nirartha’s scarf.

Tanah Lot’s rock was crumbling into the sea and the inside of the temple was becoming perilous. Work commenced in the 1990’s when the rock was in serious danger of collapsing. For almost the next twenty years work took place and is now open for business as usual.
The extensive repair work replaced rock with an authentic look substitute to ensure the temple is preserved for as long as possible. Although the work was still causing the temple to close in as late as 2009 it did not disrupt the tourism and the actual admittance to it is not the focal point of many people’s trips.
